Mussel Cracker in JBay

I caught this Mussel Cracker early Sunday morning in Jeffrey’s Bay. I used a whole Red Crab with an 8/0 hook and 0.85 maxima leader and hook line.

Mussel Cracker is arguably the strongest edible fish any angler can catch from the South African shore. They are mostly found in very rocky areas, where they can feed on crabs, mussels, worms, red bait etc. These fish have short but extremely strong runs once they are hooked. When you do manage to hook one you need to turn its head immediately towards yourself, otherwise the fish will win the fight between the rocks. You can also catch Mussel Cracker on the sandy beaches next to rocky areas where it might be easier to land the fish. You will get fewer bites there though.

Mussel Cracker is without a doubt my favourite fish to catch!

This big guy weighed in at 8kg and 78cm. You will notice the big head makes up most of the weight and its big strong tail, which enables him to give such a strong fight.

Tight Lines!!
