Identifying Fish Species

Have you ever caught a fish not knowing the name/ specie?

Or are you going to fish in a specific country/ province but not sure which type of fish you can expect to catch there?

Do you want to find out what the biology, feeding habits, climate/range are for specific fish?

Well I came across this website http://www.fishbase.org which has plenty of information on the majority of fish species all over the world. It must have taken them quite a while to put this data together! Thank you to the FishBase team for the valuable information.

I thought it would be selfish to keep this website to myself!

Here are a few tips on how to use the website:

If you already know the Family, go to

Search Fishbase, select Family and click on 'Identification by pictures' to display all available pictures in FishBase for that family.

If you already know the Country, go to Search Fishbase, select Country and click on 'Identification by pictures' to display all available pictures in FishBase for that country.

If you already know the Ecosystem, go to Search Fishbase, select Ecosystem and click on 'Identification by pictures' to display all available pictures in FishBase for that ecosystem.

I hope this valuable information will assist all fellow anglers out there!
